What is Forest School?
The heart of Forest School is bringing children into nature to play, discover, grow and build connections with the land and those around them. Forest School takes place at the same location on a repeated basis for an extended period of time-aiding relationship to place. Learning is supported by a pedagogical framework that is rooted in play and place. The learning is child-led and is guided by the practitioner through inquiry.
Why Forest School?
Forest School offers children the opportunity to reconnect with nature in a world that increasingly pulls them away from it.
Through a child-led, outdoor approach, children are supported to:
-
Move their bodies freely
-
Explore their curiosity
-
Build creativity, confidence, and resilience
-
Develop essential life skills through real-world experiences
Supporting the Whole Child
A core benefit of Forest School is its support of sensory processing and regulation.
Many children struggle to focus or feel comfortable in traditional indoor settings due to:
-
Sensory overload
-
Limited movement
-
High expectations for sitting still
Forest School offers the movement, sensory input, and flexibility children need to feel regulated, engaged, and ready to learn.
Learning That Feels Natural
When children are given space to move, explore, and follow their interests outdoors, they often:
-
Feel calmer and more focused
-
Build emotional resilience
-
Strengthen social skills
-
Develop a deeper connection to themselves, others, and the natural world
In a time when connection is more important than ever, Forest School provides a nurturing environment where children can learn in harmony with nature — at their own pace.
Forest School and Sensory Processing
Forest School offers a uniquely sensory-rich experience by immersing children in the natural world. Surrounded by the sights, sounds, and textures of the forest, children engage all their senses as they explore their environment. This dynamic setting provides the space for children to run, climb, jump in puddles, dig, and interact with natural elements, fostering physical activity and connection with nature in a way that traditional classrooms simply can't offer.

Benefits at Nurture the Nature Forest School for Sensory
Not only are we outdoors, but we have an Ontario Certified Teacher and an Occupational Therapist to develop programs/activities together alongside other professionals on the team. This is to ensure we provide the best experience for your child(ren) and meet each of their needs.

Connection to Nature
Spending time in nature offers children a vital opportunity to forge a deep connection with the environment. Through hands-on exploration, outdoor activities, and unstructured play, children develop a natural bond with the land, fostering a sense of wonder, respect, and responsibility. This connection not only nurtures their physical, emotional, spiritual, and cognitive growth, but also instills a lasting appreciation for the natural world. By engaging with nature, children grow into individuals who are not only more attuned to the environment but also motivated to become future stewards, dedicated to protecting and preserving the earth for generations to come.
